Karuna Issues Final Appeal, Ultimatum


An under pressure Karunanidhi on Friday continued to push for New Delhi’s intervention in the ongoing atrocities on Lankan Tamils, the Tamil Nadu chief minister made a “final appeal” to the Centre, by way of a resolution moved in the assembly, for an immediate ceasefire in that country.

Cautioning the government against ignoring the resolution, the third so far on the issue, Karunanidhi said: “We want a ceasefire today, next a political solution, followed by peace.”

Karunanidhi cautioned that if the resolution failed to achieve its objective, the DMK would convene either its general council or executive committee and take “appropriate decision on its future course of action,” the chief minister warned.

Deconstructing the carefully worded statement, correspondents said “appropriate action” could only be construed as a veiled threat to withdraw support from the UPA.

Karunanidhi’s threat, his third in recent times, has failed to find takes in the Congress, speaking to media persons in New Delhi, party spokesperson Manish Tiwari said that the DMK decision to call a meeting of its general council could not be termed an ultimatum.

With Lok Sabha elections scheduled for May, Karunanidhi’s failure to convince the UPA to act on behalf of Sri Lankan Tamils is sure to Under fire from his allies to add to his anti-incumbencies in Tamil Nadu, the state with whom Lankan Tamils share close cultural and family ties.
